Dhori Mata appeared miraculously deep in a coal mine in Jharkhand, India in 1956. A miner heard a voice: “Strike gently, I am here!” With the next strike he cut her arm off and discovered the statue. Because of her blackness, the majority Hindu population assumed it was the black Goddess Kali, but they were soon convinced that it was a Black Madonna. Mother Dhori (the name of the coal mine) is highly revered as their motherly, heavenly protectress by Christians, Hindus, and Muslims alike.
